A report published in June 2009 shows the exponential growth of Twitter in the US and around the world, and that even before they released the translated Spanish and French versions. The report includes a lot of information, including demographics, most tweeted words/phrases, most important cities and most used Twitter clients.
It's interesting to note how Twitter has grown internationally without a clear (or, at least, a concrete or specific) strategy for expanding in other countries. The power of the word of mouth and the need for a global communication tool like Twitter have played a fundamental role, and as soon as they reached a certain number of users in the US, the international "explosion" was expected.

Over the past few months, Twitter has experienced explosive growth, attracting celebrity users such as Oprah, and a growing mountain of media and blog coverage. Sysomos Inc., one of the world's leading social media analytics companies, conducted an extensive study to document Twitter's growth and how people are using it.
The US is the biggest Twitter country by population, followed by UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Netherlands, France, India and South Africa.
